Petrobras Turns to Cardano Blockchain to Track Sustainable Fuel Claims

Última actualización: 10/01/2026
  • Petrobras is researching two Cardano-based applications for SAF and Diesel R traceability.
  • The SAF model uses CS-SAF tokens and a book-and-claim system to reduce double counting of environmental benefits.
  • The Diesel R project aims to connect production, transport and use data for Scope 3 emissions reporting.
  • The projects remain in research, with no fuel volumes or commercial timeline announced.

Petrobras Cardano sustainable fuels

Brazilian state-controlled oil company Petrobras is examining how the Cardano blockchain could help verify sustainability claims for lower-carbon fuels, according to announcements from the Cardano Foundation and project partners. The research covers two products: sustainable aviation fuel, or SAF, and Diesel R, Petrobras’s renewable diesel. The aim is not to put fuel itself on a blockchain, but to create a shared record of environmental attributes and supply-chain events that different parties can check.

The effort is still described as research rather than a full commercial rollout. No fuel volumes, launch dates or broad implementation schedule have been made public. Even so, the initiative stands out because a large energy company is testing public blockchain infrastructure for auditing and traceability, not for crypto trading or token speculation.

Why Petrobras Is Testing Cardano for Fuel Traceability

Cardano blockchain fuel traceability

The Petrobras projects are part of a collaboration that reportedly began in 2023 with blockchain education for employees and was expanded in 2025 into energy-sector research with Ledger Labs at the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro, known as PUC-Rio. The Cardano Foundation has said the two applications were developed with PUC-Rio’s Ledger Labs. The foundation did not share how much fuel would be covered or when the systems might move beyond testing.

How the SAF Token Model Works

For aviation, the first application tokenizes environmental attributes tied to SAF. The tokens, called CS-SAF, are meant to carry metadata aligned with CORSIA, the international carbon offsetting and reduction scheme for aviation. In plain terms, each token represents a green benefit linked to sustainable aviation fuel, rather than the physical fuel itself.

The model uses a book-and-claim approach. That structure separates the environmental benefit from the physical fuel and allows the benefit to be assigned to an airline, a company or a passenger, even if the SAF was used somewhere else. This can make it easier to sell or allocate green attributes, but it also creates a risk: the same reduction could be claimed more than once if there is no reliable registry.

Cardano would serve as that registry. The system is designed to record where a benefit came from, who received it and when it was claimed. Once a token has been used or retired, the record is supposed to show that it cannot be claimed again. That is the core anti-double-counting function described by the Cardano Foundation and project partners.

There is also a passenger-facing element. A traveler could enter origin and destination airports, calculate the corresponding SAF benefit and receive a certificate tied to that trip. The certificate would be linked to the original SAF certificate, creating a verifiable connection between the final user and the fuel from which the environmental benefit came. Reports describe this as a way to engage passengers, but the exact mechanics and availability are not yet clear.

Diesel R and Scope 3 Emissions

The second Petrobras project focuses on Diesel R, a renewable diesel produced partly from renewable feedstocks such as vegetable oils and animal fats. Here, blockchain is used to create digital checkpoints across production, transport and use. The aim is to connect information held by different companies into a more continuous and auditable record.

That matters for Scope 3 emissions, which are indirect emissions generated across a company’s value chain. Scope 3 data often sits outside the reporting company’s own systems, with suppliers, logistics operators and customers holding different pieces of the puzzle. A shared blockchain record could make it easier to structure and verify those inputs, although it would not automatically prove that the original data is accurate.

In both cases, Cardano is not replacing Petrobras’s operational systems or the internal processes of supply-chain partners. The network would act as a shared layer for registering and tracing information. The value depends on how well that layer is integrated with real-world certifications, audits and data controls.

Still Research, Not a Full Rollout

Despite the attention around the announcement, the projects remain in the research phase. Petrobras and Cardano have not revealed fuel volumes, commercial timelines or a date for broader deployment. The Diesel R system in particular has been described as a proposed model. That caution matters because a pilot can look promising without answering questions about scalability, systems integration or coordination between many participants.

Data quality is another open issue. Blockchain can preserve a record, but it cannot by itself guarantee that the information entered is correct. If an incorrect sustainability figure is registered, the blockchain may keep it accurately and permanently. Any industrial-scale use would therefore need validation, certification and controls around the sources of data.

The collaboration also has an earlier education component. Reports say the relationship began with blockchain training for Petrobras employees before expanding into energy-sector applications. That background helps explain why the current projects are framed as experiments: the company is testing whether the technology fits its processes, not announcing that its fuel operations have moved onto Cardano.

Brazil as a Cardano Testbed

The Petrobras work fits Cardano’s broader effort to grow institutional and enterprise use cases in Brazil. The Cardano Foundation has pointed to Brazil as an important market for public blockchain applications, including projects with public and industrial organizations. Petrobras, as a state-controlled company, adds a high-profile energy name to that list.

The projects also show a different side of blockchain. The central asset is not a cryptocurrency or an investment token, but environmental data, certificates and supply-chain events. For energy companies under pressure to prove sustainability claims, that kind of infrastructure could be attractive if it reduces disputes and improves auditability.

What to Watch Next

The next step will depend on research results. If the tests show that Cardano can work efficiently with Petrobras’s processes, the models could move toward wider applications. For SAF, the main goal would be stronger traceability of environmental benefits and less risk of double counting. For Diesel R, a broader rollout could connect supply-chain stages and support emissions reporting.

Several questions remain unanswered. There is no public information on which business systems would need to integrate, how rewards or certificates would work at scale, or when Petrobras might decide on a larger deployment. The practical impact will also depend on how regulators, auditors and supply-chain partners accept blockchain-based records.

For Petrobras, the value of these trials is not that all of its fuel data already lives on a blockchain. It is that one of Brazil’s largest energy companies is checking whether a public network can make complex sustainability claims more traceable, while keeping the limitations around data quality, scale and implementation firmly in view.
