Circle Acquires IBM Blockchain Patent Portfolio, Becomes Top US Holder

  • Circle Internet Group acquires over 680 IBM patent families with nearly 1,000 issued patents worldwide.
  • The deal makes Circle the largest blockchain patent holder in the United States.
  • Patents cover blockchain infrastructure, banking, payments, insurance, supply chain, and cloud security.
  • Acquisition supports USDC, Circle Payments Network, Arc blockchain, and AI-driven agentic finance tools.

Circle blockchain patent acquisition from IBM

Circle Internet Group, the company behind the USDC stablecoin, has pulled off a major intellectual property move by snapping up a huge chunk of IBM’s blockchain patent library. The deal, announced on July 27, hands Circle more than 680 patent families and close to 1,000 issued patents that span everything from basic blockchain tech to banking, insurance, supply chain tracking, and secure cloud operations. While the exact price tag wasn’t disclosed, the transaction instantly vaults Circle to the top spot for blockchain patent holdings in the United States.

This isn’t just a trophy purchase. Circle says the patents will directly support its growing lineup of products, including USDC, the Circle Payments Network (CPN), its purpose-built Arc blockchain, and a new suite of agentic financial tools designed for autonomous software agents. The company also hinted at future commercial collaborations with IBM, though neither side has spelled out what those might look like. Sarah Wilson, Circle’s general counsel, called intellectual property “critical” to the company’s mission of expanding onchain infrastructure and praised IBM’s long history of tech innovation.

What the Patent Portfolio Actually Covers

The acquired patents aren’t just a random collection. IBM had been building this portfolio since its big enterprise blockchain push in the mid-2010s, and by December 2025, patent analytics firm PatSnap credited IBM with 790 U.S. blockchain patents—more than any other American company at the time. Bank of America was a distant second with roughly 200. Circle, which only received its first patent in December 2023 (for parallel blockchain data processing), went from near-zero to the top of the U.S. rankings overnight.

The portfolio includes patents related to foundational blockchain technology, banking and financial services, insurance, enterprise infrastructure, supply chain verification, and secure cloud operations. Circle didn’t publish a full list of patents or explain how it ranks against other holders, but the sheer volume gives it a massive defensive and offensive IP position. The company had previously joined the LOT Network, a coalition that protects members from patent trolls, so it’s clear they’ve been thinking about blockchain center IP strategy for a while.

How the Patents Fit Into Circle’s Product Strategy

Circle plans to use the patents across its entire stack. USDC, the world’s largest stablecoin by market cap, is the most obvious beneficiary, but the company also highlighted CPN—a network that lets financial institutions communicate and settle payments directly—and Arc, its own layer-1 blockchain designed for institutional finance. Arc uses stablecoins for transaction fees and targets faster settlement with features built for banks and fintechs. By May, Arc’s testnet had already processed over 244 million transactions.

Then there’s the agentic finance angle. In May, Circle launched the Circle Agent Stack, a set of services for software agents that can hold funds, follow spending rules, and pay for digital resources. The stack includes agent wallets, a service marketplace, command-line tools, and USDC nanopayments that can process transfers as small as $0.000001. The IBM patents include secure cloud operations and enterprise infrastructure that could overlap with systems used by autonomous financial software, though Circle hasn’t named specific patents tied to Agent Stack.

Circle also recently received OCC approval to create Circle National Trust, a federal trust bank that will offer digital asset custody services. That move, combined with the patent acquisition, signals a broader push to embed itself in the regulated financial system. Traditional finance is increasingly adopting blockchain bank components like programmability and tokenized ownership, but within controlled networks—a space Circle is clearly targeting.

Competitive Landscape and What Comes Next

Circle isn’t the only player in the stablecoin and blockchain infrastructure game. Banks, fintechs, and crypto firms are all developing their own tokens and settlement systems. Notably, IBM is also a confirmed partner in the Open Standard consortium behind Open USD, a stablecoin that launched June 30 with more than 140 backers including Visa, Mastercard, Google, BlackRock, Stripe, and Coinbase. Open USD distributes reserve income directly to its partner distributors—a model designed to compete with USDC’s revenue stream. IBM sold Circle its foundational blockchain IP while simultaneously backing a stablecoin built to eat USDC’s market share, an irony that hasn’t gone unnoticed.

Circle can use its new patents defensively against infringement claims or in cross-licensing talks, and it could also license them to other companies for income. But the company hasn’t committed to any specific strategy yet. It also hasn’t announced any legal action against competitors. The next details may come through product integrations, licensing agreements, or company filings. Circle is scheduled to report second-quarter results on August 5, which could shed more light on the financial impact of the deal.

For now, the acquisition gives Circle ownership of a broad set of issued patents as it expands beyond stablecoin issuance into payments, blockchain infrastructure, and AI-driven finance. The commercial value of the portfolio remains unreported, but the move positions Circle as a heavyweight in blockchain IP—a status that could shape the next phase of onchain financial infrastructure.
